AREA
The house is inserted in an extraordinary natural oasis surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and chestnut woods. Its advantageous position in Chianti offers lots of options for the most curious travelers.
Absolutely to visit are Greve in Chianti, reachable by car in just 10 minutes (11km), where you will also find the main services such as banks and supermarkets, Panzano (8km), Radda (18 km), Gaiole (29 km), Castellina (19 km), Siena (46 km) and of course Florence (32 km).
We are in the heart of the area called Chianti Classico, an area of excellence in the production of the namesake wine, famous all over the world, characterized by the image of the Black rooster since the fourteenth century, reproduced also by Vasari on the ceiling of the “Salone dei Cinquecento” in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
A few minutes by car from the city of Greve there are several farms and estates, such as Vignamaggio and Uzzano Castle, where you can taste extraordinary wines, among which the classic Chianti.
We are in a “doc area” not only for wines, but also for those who like to travel slowly.
In fact, wonderful trekking or mountain bike trails start from the house. We can provide you with any information about it or organize local guides on request. Greve is right in the middle of the big tour between Siena and Florence and is in fact an excellent base for tours in all directions.
Traveling by bicycle or walking in Chianti is an extraordinary experience that leaves the pleasant taste of a return to the past, of pleasant and characteristic encounters, and glimpses of immaculate landscapes: vineyards, ancient castles, abbeys, monasteries and above all the dense network of white roads that cross hills and small villages of incredible charm between Florence and Siena.
BORGO AI CASTAGNI is housed in a former convent from 1060 at Case di Vico (hamlet of Dudda, in the municipality of Greve in Chianti), a small ancient village of remote origins and already a Roman, if not an Etruscan, settlement.
Greve in Chianti, just 11km from the house, has medieval origins, and it is undoubtedly one of the most famous and fascinating towns in Chianti and can rightly be considered the capital of the Florentine Chianti, as it is completely immersed in its territory and constitutes one of the largest and most important villages.
The square, with its characteristic shape of an elongated triangle, is framed on three sides by arcades under which you can walk and it is animated by restaurants, historic butchers, wine bars and craft shops. The statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and the inevitable Black Rooster, symbol of the wine here produced, watch over it.
An open-air market is also held in the village every Saturday morning:
strolling through the picturesque streets and squares of the Chianti villages and visiting the markets is part of the Tuscan charm.
In addition, every fourth Sunday of the month there is a Special Market called Il Pagliaio, whose protagonists are organic products and their producers.
Not far from the center, the fortified village of Montefioralle stands on a hill. A real gem, where you will love walking between houses and stone walls, along narrow cobbled streets, which wind around the ancient castle, the original nucleus of the village.
The village offers extraordinary views and a breathtaking panorama.
Continuing on Via Chiantigiana, towards the heart of Chianti, you will reach Panzano in Chianti. Developed at the foot of a castle, it offers fascinating medieval buildings, and ancient churches.
The village is divided into two parts: the historic center at the top, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view, and the more modern part at the bottom, with restaurants, butchers and other shops with excellent food and wine products.
Car is necessary to move around easily, to reach Greve in Chianti with its shops, markets and restaurants, and to visit the Tuscan cities and the traditional villages of Chianti area.
