THE AREA
The house is part of the farmhouse complex Il Poggio ai Pianacci, nestled among the vineyards and olive groves surrounding the picturesque town of Greve in Chianti, from which it is about 2 km away.
In Greve in Chianti, halfway between Siena and Florence, you can breathe the air of hilly tranquillity and visit a medieval village where time seems to have stood still.
We are in the heart of the area known as Chianti Classico, an area of excellence in the production of the world-famous wine of the same name, famous since the 14th century for the image of the black rooster reproduced by Vasari on the ceiling of the Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
Just a few minutes' drive from the town of Greve are countless farms and estates, such as the Vignamaggio farm and the castles of Uzzano and da Verrazzano, the Palagio di Panzano and the village of Lamole, where you can taste exceptional wines, especially the local Chianti Classico.
We are in a DOC area that is not only famous for its wines, but also for its food: the main square has become home to an increasing number of open-air restaurants, bars and wine cellars, where you can breathe in the typical atmosphere of a Tuscan village, full of inviting aromas and flavours.
The sourroundings are also dotted with farms producing the delicious pecorino cheeses.
Absolutely worth a visit are the towns of Greve in Chianti, which can be reached by car in just 5 minutes (3 km), where you will also find the main services such as banks and supermarkets, Panzano (6 km), Radda (16 km), Gaiole (28 km), Castellina (17 km), Siena (44 km) and of course Florence (32 km).
The area is also ideal for the slower traveller.
In fact, there are wonderful trekking and mountain biking routes starting from Greve in Chianti.
We can give you all the information you need and organise local guides on request. Greve is in the middle of the Great Tour between Siena and Florence and is indeed an excellent starting point for tours in all directions.
Cycling or walking in Chianti is an extraordinary experience that leaves a pleasant taste of the past, of pleasant and characteristic encounters and glimpses of unspoilt landscapes: vineyards, ancient castles, abbeys, monasteries and, above all, the dense network of white roads that cross hills and small villages of incredible charm.
Greve in Chianti has medieval origins and is undoubtedly one of the most famous and fascinating towns in the Chianti area. It can rightly be considered the capital of the Florentine Chianti, as it is completely immersed in its territory and is one of the largest and most important towns.
The square, with its characteristic elongated triangular shape, is framed on three sides by porticoes under which you can stroll and is animated by restaurants, historic butcher's shops, wine shops and other small craft shops. It is watched over by the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and the ubiquitous black rooster, symbol of the wine produced here.
Every Saturday morning there is a large open-air market in the village: it is part of the charm of Tuscany to stroll through the picturesque streets and squares of the Chianti villages and visit the markets.
In addition, every fourth Sunday of the month there is a special market called Il Pagliaio, where the protagonists are organic products and their producers.
Not far from the town centre is the fortified village of Montefioralle, perched on a hill. A real jewel where you can walk among houses and stone walls, along narrow cobbled streets that wind around the ancient castle, the original nucleus of the village.
The village offers exceptional views and a panorama that will take your breath away.
Continuing along the Via Chiantigiana towards the heart of Chianti, you will reach Panzano in Chianti. Also built at the foot of a castle, it offers fascinating medieval buildings, churches and ancient parish churches.
The town is divided into two parts: the historic centre at the top, where you can enjoy wonderful views, and the more modern part at the bottom, with restaurants, butchers and other shops selling excellent food and wine.
